Dan Woolley, an American filmmaker was in Haiti in the lobby of his hotel when the 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit. Dan was stuck in the lobby of his Port-au-Prince hotel for 65 hours with a bleeding wound as well as a head wound and no help in sight among the rubble of what was once his hotel.

Dan turned to his iPhone for help and downloaded an app with first aid information. He used the app to find information on treating excessive bleeding and compound fracture. Using his shirt, he made a tourniquet for the large gash in his leg and a sock to stop the bleeding from the head wound.

According to MSNBC that released the story, Dan used the instructions on the app that told him to stay awake if he thought he might be going into shock, and set his iPhone’s alarm to go off every twenty minutes to awaken him.

Dan Woolley was in Haiti to make a film about the impact of poverty in the Caribbean nation working with the Christian ministry Compassion International. Dan along with another colleague had returned to their Hotel Montana after filming when the earthquake hit. His colleague, David Hames is still among the missing.

Dan was what he had on his person to access his injuries in the dark, which was his digital SLR. He used the light to find his way through the rubble and to an elevator shaft. He was found by a team of French rescuers. In a note, he had written to wife and young sons in case of the worse read, “I was in a big accident,” he wrote. “Don’t be upset at God. He always provides for his children, even in hard times. I’m still praying that God will get me out, but He may not. But He will always take care of you.”

The Pocket First Aid & CPR was the one that provided Dan with the lifesaving techniques.

As Dan can testify, there`s nothing like being prepared or knowing what to do when an emergency situation exists. Or being able to download an app to help when you find yourself in such a situation. A similar app which i keep on my iPhone is the Redivideos video training series on first aid and cpr http://www.redivideos.com

It’s not an amazing app by any stretch, but it’s a mild amuser if you have kids who love animals (as I do) – and it supports a good cause. 25% of the net proceeds from the app are donated to animal rescue organizations.
