Apple discovered that three of the supplier’s facilities were using underage workers. The report does not disclose the exact locations but the report stated the inspectors visited facilities in the United States, South Korea, Malaysia, China, Singapore, the Czech Republic, Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines. The factories in the report with underage workers built different Apple computers, iPods, and iPhones.

The report stated, “Across the three facilities, our auditors found records of 11 workers who had been hired prior to reaching the legal age, although the workers were no longer underage or no longer in active employment at the time of our audit.”

The report stated that the legal age in the country where the facilities were found with underage workers is 16; however, they are only 15 at the time of the hiring.

The report also revealed other violations with over 60 of the facilities worldwide overworking employees. Apple’s code states that suppliers are only allowed to work their employees up to 60 hours per week with “”at least one day a rest per seven days of work.”

Along with this, Apple’s audit team discovered around 25 facilities paying their employees less than the minimum wage requirement and 57 were not providing workers with required benefits such as maternity leave and sick time. The report stated that some facilities used wages as a “disciplinary” action.

Apple stated that the suppliers must create new measures in order to correct these violations. The new measures will include paying employees that were underpaid, implementing new systems to ensure work time is counted correctly, and implementing new systems to make sure employees are paid correctly. Apple will follow up with these facilities to ensure the appropriate actions are taking place.
