Yell creates Augmented Reality App for iPhone

March 16, 2010 by Anita

Yell recently unveiled an update to their iPhone application that adds Augmented Reality. If you do not quite understand what that means, the best way to describe it is to think about an overlay on life that will mark shops, businesses, and points of interest. With the built in camera on the iPhone, the GPS, and compass, Yell built that overlay. Amazing.

While you move your iPhone’s display around, it will mark various locations with yellow boxes. When you tap on one of the yellow boxes, information will be displayed on that location such as the name of the business, address, telephone number, hours of operation, and their website. The information comes from Yell’s database. You will find a radar at the top of the display, with a bar of different categories so you can look for exactly what you want instead of looking at all the businesses in the area. The categories bar allows you to set the range of detection so it will be easier to find the café or the bakery.

Matthew Bottomley, the director of new media product marketing at Yell, stated, “We’re pleased with the result of our first experiment with Augmented Reality and are now working on fully integrating AR with our mobile service later in the year”.
