Now that the iOS 4.2.1 is available from Apple (you can download iOS 4.2.1 for your iPhone / iPad / iTouch here), what you must be wondering is where you could download a jailbreak hack for it.

Thankfully the iPhone Dev Team have just released redsn0w 0.9.6b4 for everyone to download.

redsn0w 0.96b4 can jailbreak your iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iTouch 2G, iTouch 3G, iTouch 4G or the iPad running iOS 4.2.1.

You can download redsn0w 0.9.6b4 for your idevice directly from our local servers below.

With Turkey Day a few days off, today Apple publicly released FW version 4.2.1. As always, ultrasn0w unlockers please stay far far away from this official firmware (and all official firmware). Wait for the ability to create custom 4.2.1. IPSWs that don’t update your baseband! If you’re not an unlocker, read on!

The best news of all is for owners of iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. Due to a combination of our original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n, your device is “just as jailbreakable as ever.” You reap the full benefit of an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Next are the owners of all the more recent devices. The good news there is that due to geohot’s limera1n exploit, all recent devices can be jailbroken (this will be true until Apple released new hardware that fixes geohot’s limerain exploit in the bootrom). The bad news is that right now, the 4.2.1 jailbreak is *tethered* on all of these recent devices. A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state. @comex is working hard on a method that may untether the 4.2.1 jailbreak, but it will require you to have your 4.1 SHSH blobs in order to use it. No word on how much more effort it will take though (please don’t bug @comex about it!). (We also have an alternative method that may work, but @comex’s method is much more elegant.)

In the meantime, please make sure you have your 4.1 SHSH blobs for all your devices. These will be important even for firmware beyond 4.1 (using both comex’s method and our alternative, depending on how each of them turn out.)

ultrasn0w unlock: After redsn0w is officially released with the new Cydia and kernel patches, we’ll be able to assess the unlock situation. It’s already looking very promising though, so expect the unlock for the 3G and 3GS to be coming this week. The i4 unlock is taking more effort though, and no further concrete info is available about that yet.

    Yes it is possible and the firmware u have to download is the 4.2.1 and it has to be a ipsw file and then just use redsnow and follow the instructions

    Just go on redsnow, click on browse and press “Just boot tethered” and do the jailbreak

    First, i dont consider my self a computer wiz at all, so I feel lucky i got this to work, and didnt fu@# my phone. My 3gs had the 05.15 baseband so i did have to upgrade to the ipad baseband, but i got the phone for cheap so wasnt to worried about it. It was really easy, just check the box. The problems I had were when i was installing the jailbreak was Redsn0w kept crashing during the ramdisk upload. After ALOT of googling this is what i found out;

    1st) extract files from redsn0w zip file
    2nd) open and find the redsn0w file, right click, go to properties, and the Compatibility tab,
    find Windows 98/Windows Me (im using Vista and after trying a few this one finally worked for me), then check the “Run this programe as an administrator” box, and apply.

    It should work for you now. the boot up seemed to take for ever, so dont get dicouraged, just ride it out. Once you get booted up you’ll probably notice that cydia wont open. This is where you need to do a teathered bootup Basically you just go back through all the steps, except when you get the check boxes, instead of checking install Cydia and ipad baseband, ONLY check the “just boot tethered right now” box. And follow the steps again.

    Now you can go in and download ultrasn0w to unlock the phone. Once again the reboot after installing ultrasn0w takes FOR EVER, like 20mins. Almost tried to power up and try again, but it came around. I put my sim card, toggled the airplane mode on and off and it started searching. Again seemed to take way longer than i thought it would so I started googling again, and them I got my first text. It worked. Holy crap, lol.

    Ive had mine jailbroke for a couple days and its awsome. Nothing has crashed, battery life is great, GPS function works. Hope this helps.
