Apple iPhone 3G value going UP while iPhone 3GS value is dropping: Gazelle prices survey

December 4, 2010 by James

We’ve done some research into the prices that Gazelle, a leading American company that specializes in giving a second rotation to mobile phones and other electronic devices (we already wrote about them before) is currently offering for your old iPhone 3G/3GS.

The results are nothing short of incredible: while the value (or rather the price that Gazelle pays on average) for the iPhone 3GS has understandably decreased in the last few months, the average value of the iPhone 3G has actually inexplicably increased.

However both of the devices hold their value really well, as the average price for both of them also increased since July 2010.

Here are the actual results:

- The average value of a 16GB iPhone 3G according to Gazelle has increased by $16 from $88 to $104 since October 2010 (see screenshot below). At the same time the 16GB iPhone 3G now costs more than it did back in July 2010 (that was $102 back then against $104 today).

- The average price of a 16GB iPhone 3GS according to Gazelle has decreased by $14 from $157 to $143 since October 2010 (see screenshot below). At the same time the 16GB iPhone 3GS now costs more than it did back in July 2010 (that was $122 back then against $143 today).

Overall this shows that iPhones remain to be a very good investment as they keep their value very well even years after they were released – you just need to take good care of yours, and when it’s time to upgrade it you can always use Gazelle to sell your old iPhone and get some extra cash for a newer iPhone model.

After all $100 for a two and a half years old phone sounds like a very good deal to us (especially if you had it for over 2 years and as such might be eligible for a $200 or so upgrade option to iPhone 4 – depending on your mobile carrier – leaving you with only a small part of the cost to cover).

Lame. On craigslist I got $350 for a 3GS and $200 for a 3G. All you have to do to find the value of an item is to look it up in craigslist – its much more accurate. Sites like Gazelle are really looking for wholesale business purchases where the price may indeed by $150 or so – the person to person business (craigslist or ebay) is always going to be higher.

Yup, very good point in case. If you know what you’re doing craigslist, kijiji or ebay are a better choice. Though not everyone has the patience to deal with listing, selling, getting the payment etc… whereas Gazelle takes care of all that and even offers a free box to ship your phone in.However, the point of this article was more to track the evolution of average prices for older iPhone models over the last 6 months. Since Gazelle won’t pay you more than it can make its profit off, its prices can (arguably) serve as indicative for the entire second hand iPhones market. And since the prices seem to only go up, we can only conclude that iPhones have a very good resale value. That’s about it:)
