At the “Let’s Talk iPhone!” special event that took place today, Apple announced that the next version of the iPhone/iTouch/iPad OS — iOS 5 — will be released on October 12, 2011.
iOS 5 will be available to download for free to owners of iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4/iPhone 4S devices, as well as both iPad 1 and iPad 2, and iPod Touch 3G and 4G. Sadly older devices, such as the iPhone 3G and the Apple iPod Touch 2G will no longer be supported in this iOS version.
In comparison to iOS 4.3.5 firmware, iOS 5 will have over 200 new features.
Noteworthy is the inclusion of new communications service called iMessage, which will allow for exchange of text messages, photos and videos among iOS device users.

Apart of this there will be a unified Notifications Center, new app for video camera, Reminders app, a new version of Sarafi browser and Newsstand app that will allow for reading newspapers and magazines.
Apart of this iOS 5 will feature iCloud: a shared storage for iDevice users that will allow them to store personal information on Apple’s servers. 5GB of storage will be included for free.
